How To Be a Successful Pot Dealer - Part 2

  • Group the pottery in a large assortment of pots in a prominent position in the store. Often, our pots are impulse purchases — an affordable luxury — they need to be positioned where the customers will find them.
  • Offer custom potting services. This offers the opportunity for enhanced customer interaction and establishes your expertise.
  • Include pots in display vignettes throughout the store — you want to show your customers different ways to use the pots.
  • Temporary shelving fixtures can be made from Cinder blocks and 2 × 12’s for very low cost.
  • 3” diameter PVC tubing cut to varying lengths can be used inside larger pots to elevate smaller pots in your display.
  • Place pottery near live goods — customers will make the association, and will frequently buy a pot to match a specific plant purchase.
  • Place pottery near potting soil, fertilizers, and trowels. When merchandised in this manner, the pottery can actually drive sales in the soil and container gardening accessory categories.
  • Make sure that your customers can interact with the pots. Each one is unique, and your customers will want to sort through them to find the one that best suits their needs. Pots lined deep in a shelving unit may look nice and orderly, but will impede sales.
  • Make sure that larger pots are merchandised in an easily accessible area — your customers will need help loading them, and they need be to able to find your staff to do so.
  • Place pottery near seeds, especially flowers.
  • Our pots can also be merchandised outside — they are weather proof and they look great in the sunlight.
  • Combine pottery into displays with fountains and statuary.
  • Transplant potted plants from grower’s pots into our pottery. We have learned that placing a $5.00 plant into a $5.00 pot results not in a $10.00 end product, but rather in a $15.00 or $20.00 item.
  • If you sell saucers, make sure that a selection of them is in the immediate vicinity of your pottery.

We’d love to hear your success stories and see photos of your displays. Please email either to us at sales@marketpots.com.
